    the HDR processing (or whatever it is) makes the snow look like it's from a movie set, or marshmallow fluff?

    Was not HDR, I used the Nik Color Efex Pro -> Tonal Contrast effect. Might be able to tone that down a bit....

    yeah, they're tonal contrast is very similar to photomatix's tonemapping IMHO, which is what gives that HDR look.
