Thread: NSOP, School me on this lens

  1. #1

    Nikon 50mm 1.8 AF

NSOP, please tell me about this lens. I am too new to photography so I can't really grasp everything about the lens yet.

    Nikon | Normal AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D Autofocus Lens | 2137 | B&H

    or

    Nikon | AF-S Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G DX Lens | 2183 | B&H Photo Video

Which one is most likely the better of the two? Is that F-stop and lens desirable for anything other than portraits? Also, if anyone knows about the depth of field with this lens, please chime in!

    Thanks.

Oh, and if anyone knows of any alternatives to this lens, please feel free to post them too. I am looking for about the same price range as I am a broke college student I am also willing to buy a lens from a member on here, but I noticed that there is no WTB sub-forum

They're both great lenses. I've got the 50mm (like many do) and it's tack sharp at f/2.8. Great lens for the money. I've never used the 35mm but a lot of people rave about it on here.

    Thanks Nate.

B&H has the 35mm for $200. Can anyone link me to a site that shows me how to read the numbers on the lens? I have a minimal understanding and I want to make sure the little bit that I do know is actually correct lol.

Knowing the price of both, what does NSOP consider to be a more practical/more bang for buck lens?

get the 35mm. With the 1.5 crop 50 becomes awful long for someone new to photography. The only alternative is the sigma 30mm 1.4 which is a hell of a lens as well but bigger/heavier.
    I own this joint!

there is like 15 threads comparing these to lenses, I have both and would buy the 35 before the 50 any day, its nicer and built better and I don't feel trapped shooting it inside.

I'll post some shots with my 35 when I get home they block flickr at my school.

Thanks for the all the feedback and links. I am reading this while at work and I am feeling very learn-ed

Does anyone know where I can get a 35mm for cheap? I don't really mind if it is used or not.

Most used are still selling for $175-190. I'd just pony up and buy the 35 new.

Oh and I've used them both; the 35 > 50 by a mile in terms of versatility and usefulness. I found IQ to be very similar. I loved my 35 before I decided to sell it for the sigma 30 1.4.

I'd say a big Nikon forum for sale section would be your best bet.

don't even bother its worth the extra $20 for a brand new one and some places are selling it for around 230-240 I tried for a year to get one.

it's worth it and it comes with a hood and bag.

Already did! She knows I think, but she's in school too so I wouldn't want her to spend that much on valentine's day. I think I will just save a little each paycheck and I will get it myself.

Now that I think about it, I think I would much rather pay for a new one and get the hood and bag and even new lens caps. While I am thinking about it, where can I find a decent Circ. Polarizer for a pretty good price?

Back the the 35mm, does anyone have any pics that they can post. Better yet, can anyone post both a 50mm and a 35mm of the same thing so I can tell the difference? Thanks a bunch NSOP...you guys have been a huge help!
