Thread: Time lapse construction

    Time lapse construction

I'm wanting to do an ongoing time lapse for the teardown/construction of our new building. It was shot with my G3 in intervalometer mode... one shot every 3 minutes.

    Day 1:

The shadows are cool, but I was most amused by watching pavement dry

yesterday is history, tomorrow a mystery, today is a gift, that's why it's called the present.

sweet! that feature is one of the biggest selling points of the G3 for me

Yeah. Unfortunately you can only set intervals in minutes, and you can only do 100 photos before it cuts off I've ordered some Arduino stuff so I can build an intervalometer to use on my 300D.

    oooo, do tell

wait a minute, I can do that through my astrophoto program
doesn't the canon software have that capability too?

of course you have to have it connected to a laptop...

chkltcow - I am ordering an arduino too to make something. Nice!

Version 1 will just work, version 2 will do interval timers, version 3 will be wireless control, and version 4 is iphone/wireless control without a laptop. I can't wait!

It's in the attic of an 85 year old building. Needless to say, there's no power outlets up there

Day 2 is up! Big chunks of the roof came out yesterday!

I sped it up to 1 frame/1 min during the middle of it, then slowed it down again as the day ended.

You sure this is construction? Looks more like demolition, but I'm no expert. Do you have your camera plugged in to an outlet for these?

See above.... the camera is located in the attic of an 85 year old building and there are no power outlets up there. It's just running on that magical Canon juice that their batteries seem to operate on The camera shuts itself down after every shot and wakes back up for the next one, so it's not all that bad.

And yeah we're still in the demolition phase. We were told last week that "it'll take us a day to knock it down and three days to clean it up." The first video was supposed to be the ONLY video of the demolition... but here I am recording day 3 and the top floor isn't even demolished yet. The good news is that means there will be more videos for you guys

Sounds like you have a Pennsylvania construction crew. Expect the build to enter the next winter and stop for a few months straight. Oh and forget about summer, too hot!

Day 3 had some drama. They ran into a snag... quite literally. Something about the building was a lot stronger than they had anticipated, so when they hooked up the trackhoe and tried to yank it down like they did with the other sections.... it just didn't work. They pulled and tugged and the only thing it did was lift the hoe off the ground. And since it was chained to the building and the roof was now completely unstable, they couldn't send anyone up to unhook it or cut away at the bracings like they had done in other areas. So.... they brought in a second hoe, and the operator of this one wasn't quite as gentle and "subtle" as the main hoe. Subtlety be damned... they just came in and knocked the **** out of the building and yanked it down in a few minutes. I guess the guy wasn't overly fond of being called in to finish a job at 5pm.. but they had to get it down before the rain and winds came. Made for quite a show for all of us, too

    Anyway, enough reading... more watching.

Day 6 or so.... finally tearing down the vault. This is actually day TWO of tearing down the vault. Day one involved bashing it with a wrecking ball and repeatedly breaking the chain holding the wrecking ball..... then just picking it up as high as the trackhoe could hold it and dropping it on the roof of the vault.

That vault is one tough sumbitch! They're still going at it today, and have brought in a jackhammer on a backhoe to chip away at it.

I have the shots, but really and truly... there was nothing going on. I could go put something together really quick... but I assure you, it would be boring as crap.

Here's some real time footage of it. I wanted to get shots of them swinging it... but again... really boring.

Haha. Awesome. It just makes me think of some animal bashing something with a rock to get in.

And day 7.... working on the vault AGAIN!

Sorry for the seasickness. I accidentally left the autofocus on, so the minor changes in focal length as it focused sort of made me sick watching it. Too late to do much about it now, though
