ok so since i picked up this 40D, i simply love my raw files in DPP over ACR, but i loved the controls in ACR over DPP, and hated DPP as part of my workflow. however i force myself to use DPP because it simply gets skintones etc a lot better with less work than ACR. basically, DPP looks like the LCD replay of my shot, ACR looks flat and boring.

well you had to choose between ACR and DPP as your raw editor because this DPP is the only program canon would only allow picture styles to be read in..untill now.. :D

download ACR version 4.5 http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/cameraraw.html
and use adobe DNG camera profiles http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/DNG_Profiles

the profiles are more than just canon, its ALL cameras. anyway in acr, goto the camera calibrations tab, and select your camera profile. it will only show your specific makes profiles, in canons case, portrait, landscape etc. going through them all you can see ACRs defaults vs what would come up in DPP. i compared them visually from DPP and ACR and they are spot on!!

now go check it out, go go go!

DLing the profiles now. I went to ACR 4.5 on both computers last week when I reformatted at home. I noticed the camera tab, but didn't do anything with the sliders.... let's see what the profiles do though. :)

woah, that's pretty slick actually... Any way to make another version of their profiles then edit it? They've just got the standard out of the box picture styles, not what I've been using (obviously)...

what i have not tried is altering the stock profiles in camera, and then seeing if ACR actually picks that up or not. maybe someone with a camera at hand could try some tests?

no ones tried the picture styles in acr or what? i thought this was the best invention since sliced bread

no time right now...

that's what I just said and it doesn't.... I shoot with JPEGs using a custom picture style that's a juiced up landscape profile... I happened to have some RAWs & JPEGs on my card right now and when I open them they only options are standard, neutral, portrait, landscape and whatever the stock ones are.... I wouldn't mind making my own, but it'd be really nice to have in there....

well, at the very least i would like to see on my monitor what i saw in camera, thats now possible for me in ACR. there are ways to custom a profile in ACR its just wont have any connection to the camera settings.

downloaded, installed. pretty cool. i think the color accuracy is improved greatly over generic profiles.

http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/DNG_Profiles

has a link to the dng profile editor.

I'll have to try this out later. Sounds awesome, should speed up RAW processing.

is ACR 4.5 new?
i just edit the shot in camera raw and dont worry about "picture styles"

relatively yeah. Not sure when it was released, but it's new to me last week. :unamused:

As for picture styles, the more I use RAW the less I need/want them. But I've got one good picture style I've used for around a year on my 5D for landscape shots that works very well... It's not the default, but by being able to use the default and tweak it from there, it works pretty well for me in learning RAW conversions a bit better. So it's certainly nice to have.

yes, but from what i've seen, by adjusting the actual raw conversion you have the potential to achieve things you cannot with the ACR accessible adjustments (ie gamut issues).

OK, just opened a random shot from my CF card 7 different ways. Sorry about the image size, but that's as small as the ACR window will get for me and I didn't want to resize it.

ACR default: (with some adjustments made, these adjustments are the same for each file, the only thing changed picture to picture here is the camera profile):
