Seems to be a range of about $50-60 on these at places like Newegg, B&H, Amazon, etc. so not too bad of a deal. Next time look this up yourself and include it with the original post! ;p

Damnit. I guess I'll go return the 4gb ultra II I just bought for $5 more.

tempting as I "need" a faster 4gb card for the 5D (I'm using ultra IIs)... But I think I really want a extreme IV....

SanDisk Extreme IV 2GB 6.825MB/sec 7.721MB/sec
SanDisk Extreme IV 4GB 6.279MB/sec 7.375MB/sec
SanDisk Extreme III 4GB 5.655MB/sec 6.944MB/sec
SanDisk Ultra II 4GB 5.620MB/sec 6.610MB/sec

not enough of an improvement for me IMHO... But looking at the data from robgalbraith.com (http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/multi_page.asp?cid=6007-8198) I think I'll try a extreme IV in 2gb... It's the second fastest card (tested) for the 5D and it'll cost a bit less to see if the improvement's worth it....

same for the 40D (they've testing it with more cards)

SanDisk Extreme Ducati 8GB 8.798MB/sec 11.015MB/sec
SanDisk Extreme Ducati 4GB 8.491MB/sec 10.927MB/sec
SanDisk Extreme IV 2GB 8.631MB/sec 10.905MB/sec
SanDisk Extreme III 1GB 7.541MB/sec 10.728MB/sec
SanDisk Extreme IV 4GB 7.638MB/sec 10.639MB/sec
SanDisk Extreme III 2GB 7.286MB/sec 10.111MB/sec
SanDisk Extreme IV 8GB 7.089MB/sec 10.049MB/sec
SanDisk Extreme III 8GB 7.556MB/sec 9.959MB/sec
SanDisk Extreme III 4GB 7.376MB/sec 9.791MB/sec (2008 card)
SanDisk Extreme III 8GB 6.888MB/sec 9.696MB/sec (2008 card)
SanDisk Extreme III 16GB 7.386MB/sec 9.647MB/sec
SanDisk Extreme III 4GB 6.535MB/sec 9.637MB/sec
SanDisk Ultra II 2GB 7.021MB/sec 8.497MB/sec
SanDisk Extreme III 12GB 4.773MB/sec 8.138MB/sec
SanDisk Extreme 2GB 6.911MB/sec 8.091MB/sec
SanDisk Extreme III 16GB 4.77MB/sec 8.057MB/sec
SanDisk Ultra II 4GB 6.27MB/sec 7.978MB/sec

from http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/camera_multi_page.asp?cid=6007-9257

so I should either go with the extreme IVs in 2gb, or the ducatis if I want 4gb or 8gb.... good to know.

I'm probably going to get the Extreme IV Firewire 800 + 4GB card bundle. I want the fast transfers to computer in addition to good in-camera write speeds and that card reader supports the latest UDMA cards for faster transfers to the computer.

Hrmmm, looking at those numbers, for me it's a ~20% increase with the 5D going to extreme IVs and a ~36% increase for the 40D (which is already fast enough with the ultra IIs). The ducatis are only slightly faster, but to me they're the right 4gb and 8gb options if I need to go that large. It's disappointing the IVs don't make a bigger difference with the 5D since that's where I notice it more right now anyway. But 20% is also nothing to ignore either.

Damn, $54 for a 2gb extreme IV (out of stock right now) but it comes with a $20 gc to where you buy it, $50 if you buy 2, and $90 if you buy 3... I'm tempted to grab one when they're back in stock to see how much faster they are. 2GB is pretty much what I shoot usually anyway, I only need the extra when I go on trips and that type of shooting doesn't need the speed.... Interesting.

I'm guessing you're seeing the limits of what the 5Ds card writer can do there.

Got my Ducati last week and used it this past weekend and am loving it. I notice the difference between it and the Extreme IV. I also love having the Extreme IV and my spillover card and the Extreme III as the backup. An Extreme III for $40 is a great deal but I think if I were in the market for another card I'd go for another Ducati.

agreed. Also, it's files are bigger than the 40Ds, so looking at those numbers (speeds above) and considering the file sizes, it's going to be slower. I knew this, but it's nice to have numbers like that to back it up IMHO....

For some reason I take issue with stupid cross branding for memory card products and Ducati :unamused:

Well i still use the 12gb EIII in my 40D cause the space is more important than write speed when you have 17 frame Raw buffer :disco:
I have a E4 4gb in the 20D and now ill have the 30Mbps EIII in the IR rebel..
If I was doing something where I KNEW i would need as fast as possible write access Id put the E4 in the 40D but...

jacobsen1

when you have 17 frame Raw buffer

the 5D and 40D have identical RAW buffers FYI. I find it's speed in clearing the buffer to be limiting at times is all.

I got mine from Adorama, there is a mail in rebate ($40 Visa gift card I think). Took less than a week to get it. I think it was $115 before rebate.

I thought it was much smaller (9?) but i dunno, i never saw the hoopla about the 5D :)
Its never the buffer speed thats the issue, but although I used to hit the buffer limit on the 20D all the time, with the added room on the 40d I find I rarely hit it now
obviously with specific situations, ill be able to decide I need faster clearing and use the 4gb's

Just got back from shooting practice of the Red Bull Air Race and took almost 17GB of pictures. I forgot to bring my Epson so could not unload the cards. I filled my 4GB Ducati, 4GB Extreme IV, 4GB Extreme III, 2GB Ultra II, 2 - 1GB Ultra II's and 1GB Lexar 40x.

I could feel the drop in speed with each card. By the time I hit the Ultra II's I was in pain waiting for the card to write, it was killin' me.

How big are the raw files coming out of the 5D?

How big are the raw files coming out of the 5D?

I have 56 .CR2s on my card right now taking 654mb of space, they range from 11,724kb to 13,962kb... So the average is 11,678kb.

oh, and I just pulled the trigger on one of the ducati 4gb cards. I'll see how much it improves my write speed with the 5D. I'm toying with the idea of ordering a 4gb extreme IV right now too so I can see them side by side, but then I'd have to return one for sure. :unamused:

Just so you guys know, Capture One 4 is worth $130... and IMO is better than Canon's, Nikon's or Adobe's RAW converters.

bump - my e3 30mbps card just arrived
i tested it with the Extreme USB 2.0 reader and the 30mbps and the 20mbps both top out at 18mpbs
they do have funny new cases though! Theyre much thinner and clearer plastic..
I would need a firewire reader to double check my results but... I dont feel like buying it..

i wasn't sure how long it would take because CC had some ridiculous shipping quote. why did they put a label on the ouside of the package with it's contents listed? that is just dumb.
