I called Op Tech and talked to a real person (on a ****ty connection where I could BARELY hear her, even with my volume JACKED ).

They will make the entire strap there, screened and everything. Funny thing is she had to go to our website to consider making them for us... She typed it in and was like "oh nice!"... She admitted to making the POTN straps even. I guess you have to be legit for them to give you the group discount because at first they said they didn't sell in bulk until I mentioned what we wanted to do.

Here's the deal. NO EMBROIDERING! They won't do it because they feel it ruins the integrity of the strap... They don't want to be responsible for a strap breaking. Neither do I.

But they will screen anything we want on the strap. They weren't huge fans of our logo because it would most likely "block up" when printed... So we either need to come up with something new, or possibly have them try one to see how bad it would be. The issue with that is there is a $75 screen charge.

Beyond that I need to order 50 straps as the minimum... So I need to know how many people are interested before we do this to make sure enough people will buy them that I don't go broke on this deal...

Post if you're interested.
We have enough people for sure at this point, I'm counting 40 taken of the 50...
at this point, post to snag yours before they're gone...

The strap we'd get is $22 at B+H plus $4.95 shipping ($26.95).

here's the strap we'd get:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/images/largeimages/140198.jpg
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/140198-REG/Op_Tech_USA_1001252_Classic_Strap_Wide.html

notice that I want the strap with the finished edge, not the unfinished version PotN uses.

this is the logo we will be getting:
http://www.newschoolofphotography.com/wp-content/gallery/random-crap/nsop.jpg

white imprint on a black strap.

I'm interested, but the difference mainly seems to be that the "pro" version has a webbing back up to handle heavy weights better. It won't over extend, or rip as easily. (and if the neoprene does rip you still have the webbing to prevent your camera falling.) Also the pro version is curved to fit your neck.

I'd rather get the pro version personally, but either way I'm in for one.

jacobsen1
03-26-2008, 01:06 PM
I've seen both, the "pro" version looks like ****, and the "classic" has edging stitched to it that makes it "reinforced". I've used one on my 5D and 1DmII for ~2+ years now w/o any issues.

I can also ask about the "super classic strap":

I have one of the "pro" versions from POTN and have walked around many a day at track events with my 20d hanging on one with a Sigma Bigma attached. Don't be to quick to discount it as far as performance or longevity goes and it is the most comfortable strap I have every used. I am fine with what ever strap the majority wants as long as I can get it in black.

that makes 25, so it looks like I have to get off my ass and actually do this...

OK, I've already emailed them back, the logo MUST be one color. They also seriously recommend against RED. So I'm thinking white on black is the logical answer.

Also, what should the imprint say? We have 3/4" x 10" of space, so the logo will work stretched out. I'm just wondering if we use newschoolofphotography.com or www.newschoolofphotography.com?

Also, what style connectors does everyone prefer:
http://www.optechusa.com/PRODUCTIMAGES/medium/medium_XEP-VXucAe.jpg

personally I'm using the "pro loop" on the strap I have. The 3/8" style is what canon provides with their cameras, not sure with other manufactures.

LateApex
03-28-2008, 10:27 AM
+1 for the "pro-loop" connectors.

I sewed up some of my own for my Lowepro strap based on photos of your strap, Ben, and I love them.

Colorblinded
03-28-2008, 10:31 AM
I might be interested in one, but I'm not sure. If I was it'd have to be the 3/8" so I could hook it up with my wrist strap the same way I currently have the Canon strap connected.

I might be interested in one, but I'm not sure. If I was it'd have to be the 3/8" so I could hook it up with my wrist strap the same way I currently have the Canon strap connected.

Because of the way the straps are built with quick disconnects you can buy the connecter system that will work for your needs. You can buy the 3/8 connecters and the Pro Loop connecters at B&H (via the affiliate link ) . Maybe Ben can see what kind of pricing they can offer on different straps?

jacobsen1
03-28-2008, 04:47 PM
OK, so more details. We're going with the super classic strap. The classic is "rated" to 10lbs. The pro and the super classic are both rated to 15lbs so it's the same thing there. It just has a finished edge. I'll have to work on the final pricing for these as they're a tad more expensive.

As for the ends, I have to order 50 straps. I can order 49/1 either way with the ends, so Carl you can have whatever you want. As mentioned the ends are interchangeable. I'm not going to stock ends, but you can put them at B&H (via the affiliate link ;)) if you don't like what we have. I'll at least order exactly what anyone wants for the people who are in now, then maybe one or two 3/8 connectors for "stock" and the rest the pro loops.

SlvrScoobie

what benifits does the pro loop have??
I am in for one if you need 50...

Not really sure what the benefit would be, but maybe that it won't ever "slip" off... IE it can't really undo itself w/o stitches coming undone....

so here's what I'm thinking. 50 straps.
47 pro loops
3 3/8" (one for carl, 2 for other people)
www.newschoolofphotography.com (the vote is a tie, but I voted don't care and will now swing it)

I'm not sure on the leadtime, but I suppose I'll take money once they're actually here then ship them off you everyone?

LateApex
04-02-2008, 02:35 PM
For me, the benefit of the pro-loop style, is that the strap lays down nicer when you throw it in a bag or whatever. It moves any direction you want it to, unlike the webbing, that only folds one way. It also seems less noticable when it gets all twisted up. I always hated having twists in the 3/8" flat webbing.(OCD?) It's just tidier, IMO. No buckles, or sliding plastic things, or loose ends.

Pomorski

One question though. On Canon's 3/8" straps, you're able to attach that dinky little rubber viewfinder cover that you use for long exposures. Will it still be mountable on the pro loops?

jacobsen1

3/8th (like canon's straps)
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/images/largeimages/140198.jpg

proloop
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v696/tkinney/DSC_4924.jpg

pro loops are easier to use but won't work with a hand strap as well. So if you want a hand and neck strap you're stuck with the 3/8".

the approved artwork is now in the OP. It's ALL WHITE on a black strap. they won't do 2 colors (red and white) so it's all white. I'm planning on taking a red sharpie to mine to make it red and white and will post pictures for those interested. Also, I was half tempted to get some with black imprinting (black on black) but the whole run has to be the same color....

Black on black? Would that be possible to read?

yeah, I'm  like that... You'd be able to see it only because the ink would have a gloss to it. So you'd have to be up close to notice which to me would be cool/subtle... But yeah, a sharpie would work there too... I don't like a lot of logos. Yes this is my site, and I'm trying to promote it, but the stealth strap could be cool anyway. Especially for people who shoot weddings and other things where having a logo like that might not be such a good idea.

Do they keep the design on hand for you in case you need a second production run?

If so, and there's no additional fees for keeping it on hand, I'd say sell the 50 you've og ordered so far, and then if demand remains make another run.

That way, should you want to design a v2.0 strap, you're not stuck with v1.0 overstock.

Sold out before or after my order?

sorry, you get one. I wrote that confusing though eh?
I double checked, I have 5 with 3/8" straps, I've sold 3...
So at this point the last couple of people might have to take 3/8" straps since we've sold 45.... That leaves me with 3 pros and 2 3/8s left.

No problem:lol:

I guess I should ask before it's too late. Whats so great about the "Pro loop" kind that just about everyone wants one? :confused:I've never seen or heard about them so I have no idea.

jacobsen1

I like them because it's "soft" where it attached to the body. So the strap kinda falls next to the body easily when you put it in the bag... With the 3/8" connections, it's stiffer webbing so it's harder to get the strap out of the way at times.

Honestly though I ordered my original OpTech strap w/o knowing there was a difference and ended up with the pro loop... I love it after owning it but could live with either. If you use the hand strap as well you "need" the 3/8" style, but IMHO, either should work... I'd have to test that though.....

dude. USPS.com order boxes and ship priority. packing supplies are money, but you get them for free if you ship USPS priority.

Yeah, I only need envelopes though... and I have a $30 off $50 at staples coupon/card for staples... So I was going to check that and see what cheap envelopes go for. I'm waiting to get them in though so I can measure and weigh one and calculate the different rates. I'm pretty sure I'll be doing USPS and printing my own postage since I'm mailing out ~40 packages. I just need to see if they give out free envelopes -vs- how much they cost as I'm sure an envelope will be cheaper to mail right?

Under a pound I don't think it matters priority. Not sure with other rates though. If you just need envelops they have priority tyvec envelopes (those plastic fiber ones) Though the trouble is actually getting them to mail the stuff to you. I mail alot of stuff priority through ebay (well used to) and went through alot of packing material.

iunno

so, are you going to be sending these UPS or USPS?

jacobsen1
05-13-2008, 12:34 PM
I bet USPS, but I'll see once I can weight one and see how the rates stack up. If the rates are close I'll go UPS for tracking, but I'm thinking I should be able to mail them for way less $ if it's <1lb...

You can pick up most of that stuff for free at the local post office.

UPS is much better for small packages like this though. 1 pound standard ground is cheap if you have a proper UPS account.

Its okay for 1-2 boxes, but they generally dont have 50-60 in stock. Ben is going to need alot.
