Let's here it... I need to be able to do it by eye since I can't afford to buy anything fancy.

Maybe I should have posted this in the request forums instead...

I've never seemed to have a problem. (except when my work monitor **** the bed this spring)
I buy a monitor, install it, PP something, then send it out to print and compare them side by side when the print gets home...

Are there no tests/charts/graphs that I can look at on the screen that would tell me what adjustments to make?

I'm asking because some photos I took looked correctly exposed on the screen but when they were printed they were rather dark.

I'm way too color blind to rely on anything other than a colorimeter. Even then, I adjusted my monitor by eye before I bought a spyder2express just for something better than what it was, and I thought it was fine, and it was still a huge difference when I used the spyder.

This monitor was AWFUL when I got it. Viewsonic VP2030b. I love it now. Prints I send out seem to be accurate.

By eye is all but meaningless (it can help correct major errors). You're better off setting aside $60 or so and getting a Colorvision Spyder 2 or something like it.

I'm finally going to buy one of those as well to help primarily with gray levels as color isn't much use for me  . As long as color isn't horribly wrong it's not a big help for me because of my color vision.

do you only use it once?

I calibrate mine monthly. The software has a reminder setting. I don't know if it's really required though. I calibrated my dad's laptop while he was here visiting, and he is just going to leave it.

how does the licensing work for these things?
Could we say *cough* share one?
Or are they only good for x computers, then you pay for more licenses?

You could absolutely "share" one. It only asks for a serial number when you install it, then never again. No activation or anything. I have mine installed on about 5 computers between family members and multiple computers.

You'd just have to mail the colorimeter around to everyone. ....if, hypothetically, one were to do this. ;)

ETA: Mine is a Colorvision Spyder2 Express. I don't know if all of them work this way.

I would definitely be down for passing the thing around and giving you a fee for my part.

Count me in for a community colorimeter. Just let me know how much.

Should we get a list going?

I'm fine with it. I figured we would discuss it in chat so it wasn't public or whatever.

I was on best buy today and I've got a 50 dollar gift card that I've had since my wedding a year ago. I don't shop at best buy because their prices always suck.

The colorvision express was 59.99 on the BB website so just went ahead and picked one up. Surprisingly best buy did for once have an actual best buy.

Ehh?

Would this work on your TV? Yes, I suppose, if your TV is hooked up to a computer.

Distorto, how do you like it so far? Was your monitor off by much?

distorto

i honestly can't tell a difference.

the difference that you get to see immediately is because it makes you reset you mointer to default. after that, it shows you how it looks between the new settings and default.

should i just be happy that i know it is calibrated?

The idea is that your screen should match your prints (and true colors) exactly. Have you tried to print anything?

not yet, but i will soon.

bump from the dead. So people recommend the spyder2express as being totally adequate for photo work? I returned a non-functional HDMI cable for $50 credit so that looks just about perfect to me :)

tardypizza

Yeah, that one's good as is the eye one version that I have. Either way you can't go wrong, and there is such satisfaction in knowing that the colors you're seeing are correct.

I don't have it, but any chance you can download it from here: http://www.colorvision.com/index_us.php

under Support/Software Updates/Downloads/ find the right file.

It let me get to the point of saving a file but I didn't really want to download 110 megs of useless data for me.
